A.Scott Mauldin
Certified Golf Course Superintendent
Biography
Scott was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina where he learned at an early age the enjoyment of golf as well as the dedication , enthusiasm and hard work required to manage a golf facility. His hard work earned the respect of other employees at the course where he would work for golf tickets just so he could continue to play the game he enjoyed since regular play at many of the local clubs were more than he or his family could afford for him to play daily. While Scott spent more and more time on the course he learned to love the outdoors and appreciated being part of a team that could successfully manage the ever changing dynamics that comes with the daily expectations of course maintenance. Scott decided that while attending Central Piedmont Community College was providing him with some general study classes it was not providing him with a clear direction to his career goal in the golf course industry. He decided that he would enroll in one of the country's top turf management universities, North Carolina State in the fall of 1992 While in college, Scott not only excelled in the turf management curriculum but also took on some extra classes to provide him with more knowledge of the business side of the profession.
During the summer months he worked at Myers Park Country Club in Charlotte which is a historic club that lives up to its business model for maintaining the golf course and grounds to the highest of standards. During the internship, he was able to gain some valuable hands-on experience while participating in an extensive renovation of the entire golf course. He was an instrumental team player in the success of the completed project. After graduating in the spring of 1994 from North Carolina State he went on to take a full time position at Carmel Country Club in Charlotte where he was able to be part of a larger staff and course. Carmel was a 36-hole facility that supported his growth in the field by providing him with hands-on training. He was later trusted with performing most of the integrated pest management strategies planned by the director of agronomy.
When a new course owner called local industry leaders looking for an assistant superintendent to help guide the development of his new facility, Scott was recommended with high praises. He went on to help develop the $11 Million facility now known as Rocky River Golf Club. Several years after construction was completed he decided it was time to find his own course to take the next step in his career as a superintendent. He found this opportunity at Jacksonville Country Club in North Carolina, where the club was in the process of rebranding itself. With the clubhouse demolished and a new one built the golf course required some extra attention to detail in order to provide for a quality golf experience for members and their guests. Just a few of the successes that Scott was able to achieve were delivery of great turf conditioning, establishing of an equipment replacement program, balanced budgets and great team building.
During 2006 a colleague that had taken a general managers position in Virginia at the Foundry Golf Club was challenged by the members to greatly improve the course within a few years. He told the owners he would need to bring in a superintendent that he trusted to get the job completed. Scott was hired and continues to impress the members daily. During his tenure there he built successful teams to ensure daily course conditions are maintained at the highest standards, implemented an equipment lease program that saved the club over $100,000. Completed a $3 Million dollar renovation to the course in 2008 and finished the renovation to a new $1.8 million irrigation IC Rain Bird system in 2020 and achieved certification by the Audubon Society in all areas. Two years later Scott was sought after to come down to Bayville Golf Club in Virginia Beach to lead the club through an extensive renovation being redesigned by world renown golf architect Andrew Green. The construction would include green sites with pure eclipse bent grass putting surfaces, bunker renovation to incorporate capillary concrete and G angle bunker sand, along with modifying the current irrigation system through Global Irrigation Solution Design. During 2023 Scott was able to lead Bayville to be recognized by the Audubon Society to receive full Certification to the course for sustainable environmental programs. With capital improvement plans in place the club embarked on the replacement of a new wet well and rainbird pump station in 2024 that will serve as a great asset for greater water management.
